First, you need to know the pixel size (height and width) of the image
- if you have a picture editor (especially Photoshop) this is easy. In
Photoshop, for example, all you need to do is go to Edit > Image Size.
From there, it will show you the current image size of your header and
you can increase the size. You'll probably want to uncheck the
"Constrain Image Proportions" box so that you can alter both height
and width independently of one another.
If you have any other picture editor, do a help search on changing
image size.
Also, when you upload the header from the Layout > Page Elements
section, you'll want to make sure you unclick the "Shrink To XXX)
button, as this will shrink the header to fit the current header size
located in the HTML/CSS of your template - if you want to change that,
I'd do a search for that specifically... There are several blogs that
can tell you how to do it and it's quite easy.
If you need some visual aids, I have a blog post about altering
headers here:

If you want to see what this looks like on a Blogger blog (though mine
has is image map-enhanced and posted through HTML, instead of the
header gadget), you can visit my blog: http://www.superfantasticplastic.blogspot.com.
Hope that helps and happy blogging!
